Financial expert Martin Lewis advises against using tumble dryers due to their high energy costs and suggests using dehumidifiers as a more cost-effective alternative. The author shares their personal experience with a HOMCOM brand dehumidifier from Debenhams.
We're all quite used to hearing advice from Martin Lewis these days, but he rarely goes as far as to label something a 'demon appliance'. Yet that's exactly how he's labelled tumble dryer s - and it's due to how much money they cost to run.
But with so much washing to get through - with the kids' school uniforms and sports kits, not to mention the towels we get through drying the dog at this time of year - it can be hard to keep on top of it all. And those towels in particular can take an age to dry and can end up with that awful musty smell if they take too long.
You can also alter the fan speed setting and can adjust the humidity from 40% to 80% - it's recommended they're set between 30% and 50% in winter to keep your home at a comfortable level and also prevent mould. What better way to test it out properly than with a drum load of towels. It's got a 3.7L removable tank and promises to pull an impressive 16 litres of moisture per day and is suitable for areas up to 20 square metres. It won't overflow though as there's an automatic shut off to prevent that happening. There's obviously some noise when it's on, but you soon get used to that if you're in the same room. It's in the room I work from when at home so I just turn it off or have the fan on low if I need to make a call.
