The 74-year-old legendary gaffer has yet to decide whether he fancies another season at Parkhead
Veteran gaffer O’Neill, 74, has yet to decide on his future after steering the Hoops to a remarkable title triumph. The Northern Irish legend’s deal as interim manager expires on May 31 and Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final against- who spent five seasons playing under O’Neill - reckons the old master may find it impossible to walk away with a The Parkhead legend said: “Will he stay on?
I think he might. One more season. It would need to be a quick turnaround if someone was coming in now.
"There are a lot of things to be sorted in terms of the players and recruitment and all the rest of it. There's no doubt they need players to come in. ”now face just one qualifier to reach the promised land of the Champions League. The Hoops crashed out at the same hurdle last summer after a humiliating play-off defeat to Kazakh minnows Kairat Almaty.
McNamara believes O’Neill’s vast experience would significantly reduce the risk of missing out on another £40million windfall. He said: “Yeah, I think so. He's got experience of getting there and qualifying. That's the other thing that Martin's had to contend with coming in here, having the European games and then the domestic games and the Cup games on top of it.
"He's managed to navigate his way through all that. Some big matches away at Stuttgart and a few other ones there. He's used to that pressure as well.
"The champions are also braced for interest in star men Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels, with fringe players Reo Hatate and Paulo Bernardo also expected to move on. Celtic great Jackie McNamara joins Glasgow kids to celebrate the launch of On The Ball Academy’s summer football programmeIf O’Neill remains in charge, McNamara believes signing a goalscorer will be at the top of his priority list. He said: ”I think there needs to be quite a few added.
There'll be a few that maybe will leave as well. But, obviously, the striking department having a proper nine coming in.
"He's had to manage Iheanacho in the last number of months with fitness and bringing him on in games to try and get a goal late on. Maeda has been getting pushed into the middle when he's probably more suited out in the wider area.
“Callum Osmand's come back there and he looked okay when he came on. But, I think they need a proper nine to lead the line.
" Meanwhile McNamara hopes stalwart Callum McGregor commits his future to the club amid murmurs of interest from Saudi Arabia. McNamara insists the captain played a huge role in dragging Celts to a 14th title in 15 years and believes the 32-year-old still has plenty to offer. He added: "He has taken a wee bit of stick which is natural as soon as you start getting over 30. Everybody has you finished.
Your legs have gone and everything else.
“But upstairs and how he manages to play every game. His game will change over the next few years which is natural because you aren't the same when you're in your 20s to your 30s.
“But I think you can see after the Hearts game his emotion. Because as a captain you take a lot on yourself.
