Martin O'Neill Would Be Making A 'Mistake' Remaining As Celtic Manager
United Kingdom Latest News,United Kingdom Headlines

Martin O'Neill's future at Celtic remains in doubt, as the 74-year-old could decide to remain at the club for another season after title success.

, who believes O’Neill should step into a sporting director role at the club. O’Neill’s Celtic managed to overtake Hearts on the final day of the season with a late 3-1 win over their rivals to secure a fifth straight Scottish Premiership title.

The 74-year-old took over for a second interim spell in charge of the Hoops in January, with his contract set to expire in the summer. Get the inside track on the Parkhead dugout with real-time updates on shortlisted candidates, live betting market shifts, and key boardroom decisions.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that O’Neill does not have the “energy” to stay at Celtic in the dugout.

‘s Inside Track podcast: “I listened to Martin’s interview the other day on the radio, and I was disappointed with the way that he felt the actions at the weekend were going. “I did sense that the energy was not quite there. He did seem reinvigorated, but I don’t think he could face the drama of another season.

That may be too much for him, although he’s an old campaigner and that European sort of campaign may be the thing that drags him back in.

“For me, the best thing would be to go in as a sporting director with full authority over the football operations and put in a coach that would work with him. That would have made sense and I still thought the Shaun Maloney, Martin O’Neill duo was the right solution in many ways.

“That may well be something I have to look at again, but Martin would have a big say in it. I think it would be a mistake for him to go on for another year. ”Celtic have to appoint their next manager before the club can make any major decisions ahead of the summer transfer window. Multiple players face uncertain futures at Celtic Park, including midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was signed as a free agent in February.

Oxlade-Chamberlain though was out of favour during Celtic’s post-split fixtures, remaining on the bench for the final four games of the season.
