Yet another starry-eyed documentary about the band has little to make it stand out in a crowded field
documentary features John, Paul, George and Ringo on stage in Washington DC, with George Harrison leading his bandmates through a raucous “Twist and Shout”. The camera is in the middle of the crowd and, peeking over the shoulders of screaming fans, we see the Beatles not as musical icons or historical figures, but as red-hot musicians blowing the audience away with their sheer, visceral energy.
It’s a thrilling glimpse of what it must have been like to encounter The Beatles at the height of their power. But such moments are sadly few and far between across this bloated film. There’s so much unnecessary padding that it’s a miracle a fire officer wasn’t required to sign off on it.is far more superficial and suffers from the same starry-eyed quality that characterises recent Beatles documentaries .
The message that The Beatles were more than just a rock band is reinforced as Scorsese and Tedeschi wedge in contemporaneous interviews with Leonard Bernstein and philosopher Marshall McLuhan, who sagely tells us JFK was “the first TV President”. No doubt he was – but what has that to do with Macca and the gang?
More revealing are the present-day interviews with surviving members McCartney and Starr. McCartney recalls their shabby treatment when visiting the British embassy in Washington DC, where the staff openly looked down on them as jumped-up oiks.“We’re working-class guys, and if you come up against posh people, you figure they are gonna look down on you,” he says, his voice dark and stormy.
The Fab Four industry has gone into overdrive to the point where even the most diehard devotee surely risks Beatles burn-out. There wasfootage was taken).
