'I love the way he plays the game. I didn’t like his antics after he hit the home run ... He’s only got two weeks in the big leagues.' Davey Martinez elaborated on his decision to ask umpires to check Elly De La Cruz’s bat before he blasted a home run.
Martinez said “it wasn’t a big issue” and he “just wanted to know what that was” regarding the casing for the sensor.“I know what the device is, but I’ve never seen wear it during the game,” Martinez said about the device that’s used to track metrics on bat swings.
“They checked it and when they came back and told me, ‘Hey, it’s legal,’ it was all good,” Martinez said. “It was over. It was done with. … I’m not going to make a big deal about it.”, but the umpires didn’t have record of it initially and “by the second at-bat, it was cleared up.” Bell also praised the 21-year-old, saying, “Elly’s been playing great, plays with a lot of emotion and joy in a good way, but he’s great at channeling that properly too. … I thought that was impressive how he did that tonight.”Nothing in his first month in the big leagues has seemed to phase De La Cruz. While De La Cruz did look agitated in his second-inning at-bat, adjusting and readjusting his grip on his bottom hand before striking out.
De La Cruz has had a home run celebration including him dabbing with the third-base coach since the minor leagues. He celebrates just about everything he does on the field, flipping his bat and flashing four fingers on each hand to represent his jersey No. 44 on his first career homer. There have been some who have questioned the shows of emotion, but his manager, Bell, has encouraged him to express himself and play loose. It seems to be the right course so far.
