Each week, you'll hear about incredible women who leave their mark on the automotive industry. .Under Barra, more women have been promoted to top jobs, and in 2021, the makeup of the General Motors board of directors saw a historic tipping of the scales: seven women and six men.
Barra co-authored a report in 2018 that concluded governments and companies should do more to attract and retain women and other underrepresented groups to science-related fields. The report was published by a women’s business council set up by U.S. president Donald Trump and Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.
Having Barra at the steering wheel, you definitely feel the support to increase the number of women pursuing STEM careers, Gaines says. “Seeing her in her position is inspiring for all of us, and the workplace looks different.” Other women have cited her as the reason they joined GM; Barra’s leadership has inspired women internally as well as externally where she has gained a reputation as a badass who walks the walk and has flung the door wide open for women to join.
Barra held a variety of positions at GM; some used her engineering acumen, others her business skills. Running the Detroit Hamtramck plant utilized both. The resourceful woman gained ever more senior positions, leading global manufacturing engineering, where she developed factory processes and machinery. Post-bankruptcy she was put in charge of human resources, staffing the company to handle the government-mandated restructuring while working under pay restrictions.
