Mary's trademark energy shows little sign of diminishing as she approaches her 75th birthday
She may be small in stature – but Mary Burney has made a big contribution everywhere she’s been, no matter the challenge.
Perhaps that stems from an itinerant childhood, due to her father Bill Scott’s various army postings in the 1950s.Bill, Mary explains, was wounded with the Camerons at Dunkirk in June 1940.“He didn’t talk a lot about it.“My father was from Edinburgh and my mother Mary Smith’s relatives were from Aberdeenshire.“We went out there as a family when I was seven or eight.“I remember it being very hot and I went to a British Army school in a three-ton army truck.
“At each road end on our bikes we would gather up somebody else so by the time we got to the hall there was quite a lot of us.” “Almost immediately I was asked to do a secondment at Lochside Education Centre in Dumfries,” she recalls. “Having worked for 40 years, getting up in the morning, getting dressed and going to work it was the strangest feeling suddenly having nothing,” she tells me.“But I had no sooner retired when I was asked if I would take on the secretary’s job with the Stewartry Show.“The committee was predominately men and the secretary was very much left to get on with things themselves.“My first show went off remarkably well then it simply became a routine.
More impressively, Mary is also the current national president of the Scottish Women’s Institute, a role she has held since May.“I have been a member ever since.
