A structure collapsed in Gaithersburg and people were trapped after the tornado passed by, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.
The Olde Town neighborhood in Gaithersburg sustained the heaviest damage from the tornado that swept through Montgomery County on Wednesday evening. The storm significantly damaged three homes, including one on Dogwood Road that collapsed and trapped five people in the debris, said Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Earl Stoddard. Those five people were swiftly rescued, Stoddard said, and one was taken to the hospital as a trauma transfer with non-life-threatening injuries. As of 9 p.m.
Speaking on the phone while standing outside the collapsed Dogwood Road home, Stoddard said the storm downed trees and power lines across the county, leaving some residents temporarily without power. Those outages are spotty and the storm did not cause large-scale blackouts, Stoddard said. In fact, he said the lights were on in the home across the street from the collapsed property.
