An awful crime
Masked raiders who tied up an elderly couple in a terrifying burglary have both been handed hefty jail sentences. Simon Hinton, 51, of Golf Close Bulwell, carried out an aggravated burglary in Spring Hill, Kimberley, on October 16, 2020, with Dale Wright, 42, of Lynncroft, Eastwood.
The offenders ripped the landline phone cable from the wall and broken the victims’ mobile phones to prevent them calling for help. They fled the scene in the victims’ car having stolen £24,762 worth of jewellery, including many sentimental items. Wright was told he knew violence would be used - and he went "with cause tying up your victims", said Judge James Sampson, who sentenced him. Hinton's violence, if he was the principle offender in that regard, "is also your violence," added the judge.
Hinton was jailed for the same offences and a second aggravated burglary at a house involving three victims in Holly Road in Watnall on October 8, 2020, where he went armed with a sword. One victim suffered cuts, his back left heel was fractured, and he was left with flashbacks. Both offences committed by Hinton involved the targeting of elderly and vulnerable victims, particularly in the second offence, and some degree of planning. Masks were used and weapons taken to the scene.
