Mason Mount hasn't enjoyed a great start to life at Man United but that could be about to change.
The former Chelsea star was United's first signing of the summer and a player Erik ten Hag desperately wanted. So much so that the quest to finally sign an all-important striker was put on hold so the midfield could be enhanced first.
But despite all the positives, it just hasn't clicked so far. It's been an optimism-draining start to the season for United in general. They have lost against talented opposition in Tottenham and Arsenal and only just managed to scrape past Wolves and Nottingham Forest for their six points, not to mention all the controversy off the pitch.
Mount was injured for the trip to Arsenal last Sunday and it's telling that, despite the result, United put in their best display of the season so far with a return to Christian Eriksen sitting alongside Casemiro. The game may have been lost 3-1 but if the wind was blowing the other way United may have come away with a win. They still lacked in an attacking sense but were a much more solid and compact outfit while being a threat on the break as a result of the more familiar set-up.
Well, a position on the right flank has just opened up. Antony is on a leave of absence as he faces abuse accusations from three women in Brazil, Jadon Sancho looks on the outs after publically challenging Ten Hag over comments about his conduct in training and Amad Diallo is still sidelined. Being caught out on the flank isn't quite as dangerous as in the middle and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is secure cover behind him anyway, especially with either Casemiro or Amrabat able to come over and help as there will be two of them. Mount is much more comfortable playing in a more advanced position where he likes to try and influence games and though he prefers a central role, he has played lots of times on both wings.
