The Birth Trauma Inquiry has found that women are 'treated as an inconvenience' and recommends an overhaul of the UK's maternity services
An inquiry into traumatic childbirths has led to calls for an overhaul of the UK’s maternity services after it found that mums were experiencing a ‘postcode lottery’ in receiving adequate care. The Birth Trauma Inquiry heard testimonies from more than 1,300 women who shared ‘harrowing’ stories of their own childbirth experiences, with many revealing that they’d been ‘left traumatised’ by their experiences.
‘The stories told by parents were harrowing. They included accounts of stillbirth, premature birth, babies born with cerebral palsy caused by oxygen deprivation, and life-changing injuries to women as the result of severe tearing. The authors call for a maternity system ‘where poor care is the exception rather than the rule’. They said in the report findings:‘We have made a set of recommendations that aim to address these problems and work towards a maternity system that is woman-centred and where poor care is the exception rather than the rule.
