Mathew Horne, star of Gavin and Stacey, has spoken candidly about the negative backlash he received following his role in the 2009 film Lesbian Vampire Killers. He describes the experience as 'anxiety-inducing' and 'hurtful', contrasting it with the positive reception of Gavin and Stacey.
Gavin and Stacey star Mathew Horne has detailed his 'awful' experience following the backlash he received from a movie role with co-star James Corden. Just a few years after the first series of Gavin and Stacey aired, Mathew and James starred alongside each other in the 2009 comedy horror film Lesbian Vampire Killers , but it wasn't received too well by critics.
Mathew, who starred as Jimmy McLaren in the movie, revealed that it was 'anxiety-inducing' after his character received heavy criticism - a far cry from his role as Gavin Shipman in the beloved BBC series. Speaking to the Guardian about his role in Lesbian Vampire Killers, Mathew shared: 'In 2009, I experienced a total character decimation in the press. Being in the eye of the storm was chaotic, both emotionally and physically. 'Very overwhelming, incredibly anxiety-inducing, and really hurtful. I’m only human. Skin can only grow so thick. I can laugh about it now, but at the time, the response was horrible and upset me. I had to hold on very tight to weather that storm.' Seeking some positives from the difficult time, Mathew added: 'While it was awful, I am so grateful that I have experienced both ends of the spectrum. My CV has seen the good and the bad, the highs of the reception to Gavin and Stacey and the lows of that year. 'It taught me that nobody knows for sure if a project is going to be a success, and that has allowed me to have a bit more peace with the direction of my career, because nothing is in my control. All I can do is my very best in whatever job I’m blessed to be offered.' The admission comes just days after Mathew was rushed off stage after sustaining a head injury during a West End performance. The actor, currently starring in The Tempest at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, suffered the mishap just ten minutes into Tuesday (17 December) night's show. He reportedly hit his forehead on a rock while rolling on the floor as part of the play
