The Matildas have been knocked out of the FIFA Women's World Cup after a crushing 3-1 defeat to England.

The Lionesses were too good for the Matildas and their structured and patient style was clinical at Stadium Australia on Wednesday night.

Kerr thrust some life into the Sydney crowd with her stunning goal from outside the box in the 63rd minute but England soon took the lead back in the 71st minute. In the early stages of the match England was dominant in attack putting huge amounts of pressure on the Australian defenders. Toone was stalking at the top of the Australian box when a beautiful pass from the byline by Alessia Russo found her in space.

Sam Kerr got Australia back into the contest with the goal of the night. Gustavsson looked to his bench as the final 10 minutes ticked down and defender Clare Polkinghorne was subbed off for striker Emily Van Egmond.
