Actor Matthew Perry shares his struggles with addiction, including alcoholism and dependency on drugs, in his memoir. He details his journey through rehab, therapy, and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and finds joy in helping others in recovery. Perry aims to de-stigmatize addiction and raise awareness about the disease.
‘Your disease is outside doing one-armed push-ups just waiting for you, waiting to get you alone,’ the actor said last year
The actor faced a years-long battle for sobriety, opening up in his memoir about his alcoholism as well as dependency on methadone, Xanax and cocaine – at his darkest point, drinking two pints of vodka and popping 55 pills a day. “The best thing about me, bar none, is that if somebody comes up to me and says: ‘I can’t stop drinking, can you help me?’ I can say yes and follow up and do it. That’s the best thing,” he said last year.Speaking last year, Perry said a desire to de-stigmatise addiction was the motivation behind writing his memoir.
While his best-known comedy role has continued to bring joy to millions for years thanks to a resurgence on Netflix, Perry himself found it difficult to rewatch until recently. While he self-imposed a rule not to drink or do drugs while filming after Jennifer Aniston confronted him about being inebriated at work, he explained: “I didn’t watch the show, and haven’t watched the show, because I could go: ‘Drinking, opiates, drinking, cocaine.’ I could tell season by season by how I looked.
