Obituary: Father Bob Maguire was a maverick on a mission to help people in need. His approach was destined to put him at odds with the Catholic Church, despite the fact he was a priest.
The foundation runs an outreach program, a street-based community meals program – delivered through “HopeMobiles” – a community pantry, an advocacy service and social inclusion programs. In 2005, Maguire gained national exposure on broadcaster Triple J, appearing on writer and broadcaster John Safran’s. It was a massive hit, an irreverent yet illuminating foray into philosophy the likes of which we had not seen in Australia.
Born in 1934, he was the son of a violent, alcoholic father, James Maguire, who had migrated from Glasgow in 1922, and Annie , who was from Edinburgh. The youngest of four children, his only memory of his father taking any notice of him “was when he’d been away and when he came home, he beat me with his belt”.
