Mayor Ron Nirenburg made the declaration, signaling a commitment to prioritize mental health initiatives across all city departments .

The proclamation mandates that all city departments attain trauma-informed certifications, reflecting a city-wide effort to integrate trauma-informed practices into various services and interactions with the community. Joined by representatives from several mental health organizations serving individuals in need of mental health services, Metro Health spearheaded the initiative. Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda emphasized the significance of addressing mental illness and its root causes, asserting that improving mental health contributes to a better quality of life for all residents.

"Mental health is public safety," stated Councilwoman Havrda. "We talk a lot about all our public safety, and I chair our public safety committee, but we bring mental health to that committee quite often in different forms - but it's the safety of our community." This proclamation coincides with the city's approval of over $400,000 for the San Antonio Police Department's Mental Health Unit Program for Intensive Care Coordination. The funding, sourced from the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council, will support efforts to enhance mental health services and coordination within the police department.
