Mothers, not just Mexican or Latina mothers, are the glue that hold families together.

It is my firm belief that the month of May should be officially designated as “National Mother’s Month.” If that sounds like a wild idea, you should know that there’s substantial precedent for it, as multiple cultures within the U.S. already celebrate the holiday more than once within the month of May, including more than half of the Hispanics in the United States, otherwise known as Mexican Americans.
It was the one day where she didn’t have to cook, which must have been a relief to her, but was far less popular among the rest of us as we absolutely loved her cooking. The following, “American Mothers Day,” was typically a smaller, more subdued event, but no less significant. On that day, my immediate family would celebrate our mother, typically at a restaurant, as mom’s cooking was far less popular than grandma’s. But my mother had developed her own hierarchy within our family unit.
