Maya Hawke unpacks toxic love in her latest single “Hang In There,” from her upcoming album, 'Chaos Angel,' set to release on May 31st via Mom+Pop.
“He said, he could see through to your core/You thought, his heart was open like yours,” sings Hawke in the opening verse, before detailing a story of a relationship sowed with doubt and violence. For the chorus, the musician delivers bittersweet words of comfort: “He’s gonna get away with it/I know, I’ve been there/You’re gonna get the hang of it/Hang on, hang in there.
In a statement, Hawke explained that the idea behind the new track “is when you have someone close to you, who’s going through something awful that you’ve been through earlier in your life, and you know that you can’t interfere because they’ll probably isolate themselves from you.” She continued, “So you have to just watch as they get really hurt. Until they have that moment where they realize they’ve been in a toxic situation all along.
