From losing his dad at one-week-old to health warning, why the new Mayor of Pendle feels lucky despite it all
Coun Brian Newman, who has just been appointed Mayor, grew up as a youngster on a farm with his mum and grandparents, and attended school in Nelson. Now a Lib-Dem borough councillor for Fence and Higham, he is also known for running garage businesses for 30 years, delivering milk and keeping sheep as a hobby.
Brian was born at Fern Lea maternity home in Nelson. .As a youngster, he attended Percy Street and Bentley Street schools in Nelson and Whitefield Secondary Modern. Speaking at the council meeting, Lib-Dem Coun David Whipp said: "I know Brian is a very good mechanic and he has probably serviced about half of all cars in Pendle. People have tremendous faith in him.
Coun Newman thanked councillors for their support and added: "I'm really grateful to my wife, Lynne, for her support and delighted she has agreed to be the Mayoress."
