She is reducing her public schedule
The Mayor of Lancaster has spoken emotionally about having to step back from her role after just a few months because of cancer treatment, as her 21-year-old son and another councillor step in to help.
Her son, Coun Hamish Mills, has the role of Deputy Mayor. He will attend civic events and be the chairperson at full council meetings when she is unavailable. Hamish led this month's full council meeting where councillors agreed to create a new role of assistant deputy mayor to help maintain a presence at events, especially during the busy Christmas season. The assistant role was given to Coun Sam Riches.
"In the last couple of months, I have been lucky enough to attend many events as mayor, meeting a variety of amazing people, celebrating and commemorating with the community. These couple of months has made me fully appreciate the value and significance of the role of the mayor in our communities. Hamish Mills works at The Herbarian cafe in Lancaster in addition to being a city councillor. Speaking at the end of this month's full council meeting, he said: "Three people showed interest in taking on the assistant deputy mayor role, which we appreciate. Sam Riches had the most time available and she also has a car, which is useful. I'm happy that I am able to fill-in the mayoral role in unfortunate circumstances and I'll do the best job I can.
