Kylian Mbappe has opened up about the mental struggles he faced after joining Real Madrid, admitting a 'mentality issue' initially hampered his performances. The French superstar struggled to find his best form in the early months, but a shift in mindset has seen him rediscover his scoring touch.

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe has admitted that a 'mentality issue' hindered his initial performances for the club this season. Mbappe struggled in the early months following his high-profile transfer, managing only three goals in 11 appearances. This included missed penalties against both Liverpool in the Champions League and Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, both resulting in defeats for Madrid.

The forward confessed to feeling at 'rock bottom' after those misses, but a change in his approach has led to four goals in his last three outings. 'I believe it was a mentality issue and that was a point I realised that I had to work harder,' Mbappe said. 'I was thinking too much about how to do things. Whether to go into space, whether to go to Vini's area of the pitch, to Rodrygo's area. When you overthink, you don't focus on your game. 'I was fine physically and with the group but I knew I had to do more, that was the time to change the situation.' Since the December 4 defeat by Bilbao, Mbappe has found his scoring touch, netting eight goals in 10 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has quelled speculation about his own future at the club, stating that while his departure is inevitable, the timing remains uncertain. 'This day will come, but it won't be me the one who decides. It could be tomorrow or in five years. The plan is to be here with Florentino for another four years and say goodbye.' Real Madrid, currently 20th in the 36-team Champions League standings, face Red Bull Salzburg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday (20:00 GMT)
