The old adage is true: it takes a village to raise a child. The flip side is that if we don't raise our children, the village will raise them for us. And that's not always a good thing, writes contributing columnist John McCaa.It is not always wise to listen to the crowd. Sometimes following the latest trending mantra on what constitutes wisdom can land you in real trouble, even though its appeal rushes like wildfire through the public.as staking a claim as its point of origination.
Whether getting help is something to be desired depends on the village. I am not just talking about pedophiles and social malcontents who want to prey on children. It can be particularly unnerving when the values of parents are at odds with the beliefs of the village. Consider the mother and father of Michigan teen mass shooter Ethan Crumbley. Their April convictions in connection with his killing spree taking the lives of four others was about the multiple opportunities they missed to keep their child from harming others.
Some will say, “I’ll take care of my kids. Let others worry about their own!” That sounds nice until you look down the road and realize if you have a little boy, and somewhere on this planet someone is raising his future wife, the mother of your grandchildren. If you have a little girl, the one-day father of her children is being brought up at this hour by people who are likely strangers to you.
