The world's largest fast food chain has submitted plans to Ashfield District Council for a brand-new eatery on land off Lane End, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, opposite the road's Aldi supermarket

McDonald's says it will create more 250 jobs in a Nottinghamshire town if it is allowed to build a new restaurant on a patch of wasteland. The world's largest fast food chain has submitted plans to Ashfield District Council for a brand-new eatery on land off Lane End, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, opposite the road's Aldi supermarket.

The huge company has proposed to redevelop the land, which had been an engineering works before it was torn down, into a drive-thru restaurant with car parking. After consulting with residents and the council, McDonald's representatives said its new drive-thru would be a "high-quality development which reflects the visual prominence of the site".

The chain said it had reworked the planned layout to avoid areas of high flood risk and the access has been widened to allow for safe access for larger vehicles. The drive-thru lane has also been moved further into the site to retain as many of the trees on the southern and western boundaries as possible, McDonald's planners explained.

The construction work would add around £11.5 million to the economy, planners added, with the new jobs generating another £3.1 million locally. Ashfield District Council would benefit from an extra £22,400 in business rates revenue. "The design concept for the proposal centres on the delivery of a high-quality development that supports local demand for a McDonald’s restaurant and will bring a vacant, brownfield site back into use in a prominent gateway to Ashfield town centre." The planning application is pending consideration by Ashfield District Council.
