It was on July 30, 2016 that Rory McIlroy became a two-weight world champion in New York
It is a night that will live long in the memory. A night when Carl Frampton wrote his name into the history books, and the pantheon of boxing's greats.
When and where was the fight? The fight took place at the Barclays Center in New York on Saturday, July 30, 2016. Who was in attendance? There was plenty of star power at the Barclays Center, including golfer Rory McIlroy and former Chelsea and England football star Frank Lampard and his wife Christine. Northern Ireland football manager Michael O'Neill was also at ringside.
How was it scored? Judge Guido Cavalleri scored the fight 114-114, but he was overruled by Tom Schreck and Frank Lombardi , who both had it for Frampton. Leo Santa Cruz : "It was a tough fight from the beginning. We knew it was going to be a tough fight, but I thought it was close when I'm in there throwing. Maybe the judges were hearing the crowd and thought that every little punch was scoring."
