McInnes appeared on the brink over saying yes to Rangers almost nine years ago but he is set to this timeis closing in on becoming the next manager of Rangers - almost nine years after the first attempt to lure him to his former club dramatically collapsed.
McInnes was locked in talks with Andrew Cavenagh to succeed outgoing Danny Rohl, has offered a fascinating insight into the inner workings of one of the dramatic managerial chases in recent memory. With McInnes bound for his former club, our man is keen to stress it wasn't a slight on Rangers back in the day– it came down to Dave King and a late shift during contract talks that resulted in caretaker Graeme Murty remarkably landing the job for the rest of the 2017/18 season.
McInnes' change of heart after learning of the inner workings at Ibrox under King's leadership sparked an infamous statement and appeared to end the 54-year-old's bid to manage the club he represented as a player with distinction. But now, all these years later, McInnes is all-but certainly heading back to Rangers and our man offered his insight and the role the late Walter Smith played during his previous talks with Ibrox chiefs.
