Northern Irish golfer Tom McKibbin is reportedly considering a move to LIV Golf despite securing a PGA Tour card for 2025.
Tom McKibbin declined to comment on rumors linking him to LIV Golf during an event in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. The 22-year-old from Newtownabbey has been heavily associated with joining Jon Rahm 's Legion XIII for 2025, despite securing the final PGA Tour card available to DP World Tour members last November. Reports indicate McKibbin is poised to partner with Tyrrell Hatton and Caleb Surratt on Rahm's four-man team for the LIV season opener in Riyadh on February 6th.
The transition is purportedly worth €8 million for McKibbin from the Saudi Arabia-backed organization. Currently ranked 110th globally, McKibbin's decision comes after South African golfer Dean Burmester, ranked five places lower, switched to LIV and earned over $17 million in 27 LIV Golf starts. McKibbin had already guaranteed himself a PGA Tour card in the US for 2025, which would have significantly increased his earnings compared to recent years on the DP World Tour. PGA Tour winner Scottie Scheffler topped the 2024 PGA Tour earnings list with nearly $30 million, while the average winnings for all PGA Tour players in 2024 amounted to $2,109,985. Despite these lucrative prospects, speculation suggests McKibbin could earn €8 million simply for joining LIV, potentially influencing his decision. However, the move could negatively impact his world ranking and exclude him from major events like the Ryder Cup due to LIV tournaments lacking OWGR accreditation. Former world No. 4 Graeme McDowell, who defected to LIV in 2022, currently sits at 1248th in the world rankings and hasn't participated in a major since the inaugural Saudi-backed league event in the summer of 2022
