A Collin County jury handed down the sentence Monday to Joel Jesus Torres, who was convicted of murder, according to court records.
Joel Jesus Torres has been convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in the fatal shooting of his fiancée.
McKinney officers responded to a shots fired call Nov. 14, 2021, in the 4600 block of Kingsway Lane, according to a news release from the county criminal district attorney’s office. Torres made the call, telling dispatchers he shot his fiancée, 21-year-old Shailene Velez, while trying to clear his semi-automatic handgun.
In the trial held earlier this month, prosecutors pointed out several inconsistences compared with the crime scene that included surveillance video of a dispute between him and Velez, a live round chambered in the weapon and an “apparent staged crime scene,” according to the release. In addition, prosecutors said Velez’s injuries were inconsistent with what Torres said.
