It is occurrences like this year’s shooting at LeFlore High School that injured two students that create a sense of fear in students, teachers and parents. That is why MCPSS put safety as their number one priority.
According to data gathered by Washington Post, in 2023, Alabama had an increase of incidents involving weapons found at school. That is why MCPSS put safety as their number one priority.
“We are the first school system locally to install our advanced weapon detection screening systems,” Director of Communications Rena Philips said. “We have the same goals as our parents which is to keep our kids safe.”If found having something they are not supposed to, a red light will go off. Then, they will be asked to step aside, and their personal belongings will be searched by school staff.
Wherever the item was spotted, a red cube will be shown on a tablet to school staff to notify them where to look.“You’ve seen this if you’ve been to Disney World or if you’ve been to a sporting event and they are ten times faster than a traditional metal detector,” she said. “The good thing about these is that students can go through them pretty quickly, they don’t have to empty their pockets, and we can get started with class.
According to Philips, schools like Baker High School that have multiple entries will have more than one detector. While sporting events have previously used metal detectors, MCPSS said they are looking at whether or not they will switch to the weapon detectors instead of metal detectors.UPDATE: One person killed in Saturday morning shooting, deceased identifiedMotorcyclist involved in wreck with Mobile PD patrol vehicle has died, police confirm
