Scott McTominay discusses his departure from Manchester United for Napoli, highlighting the opportunity for personal growth and a fresh challenge.
Scotland star Scott McTominay has revealed the details of his final conversation with Erik ten Hag as a Manchester United player. The midfielder is enjoying a standout season with Italian side Napoli , becoming a firm fans' favourite at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona - and has already netted four goals for Antonio Conte's outfit, whilst securing his place as one of the first names on Steve Clarke's team sheet for the national side.
However after 22 years at Old Trafford he quit the club for a fresh start in Serie A, with United deciding to offload McTominay for a fee of £25million to help balance the books - with the sale registered as ‘100 per cent profit’ under financial fair play regulations. And the 28-year-old, who has made 58 appearances for the national side which he qualifies for thanks to his dad hailing from Helensburgh, opened up to BBC Scotland about his decision to leave the Red Devils - saying it was one where he had to put his own career above sentimentality. He said: 'It was a mutual decision. It was a case of - there's an opportunity there, do you want to go? I saw the passionate fans, I saw the coach, I saw the players and I saw an opportunity. I took it. I didn't look back. It didn't take me long to make the decision because I knew that was what I wanted, and I'll never have any regrets in my life. 'On my last day, I had to go and see everyone and it was not easy to say goodbye. But that's football, that's the life. I spoke to him and he expressed his thoughts on the situation, I said, 'listen it's my career, I am here to push myself on'. In this situation, I have to look out for number one and go with my gut feeling of what I want to do in my career and not be held back by any other external factors. 'It was amicable. I love that football club to bits, they have been my life for 22 years, but I have moved on now. I am thoroughly enjoying myself her
