Scientists predict exciting medical advancements in 2025, including new Alzheimer's treatments, a groundbreaking skin cancer vaccine, and personalized health apps.
New Alzheimer's disease drugs, a world-first skin cancer vaccine, and personalised health apps that change the way we track our diets are just some of the medical breakthroughs that are set to emerge in 2025, scientists believe. With the continued development of artificial intelligence and drug development, it is hoped there could soon be breakthroughs on treatment for a raft of illnesses and conditions.
In 2024 alone, scientists in Sweden developed a blood test which can identify Alzheimer’s disease in older adults with approximately 90 per cent accuracy while a man successfully received a genetically modified kidney from a pig to name two.“One of the biggest breakthroughs in neurology will relate to the ongoing development of blood testing for the underlying causes of dementia and neurodegeneration, particularly Alzheimer’s Disease,” according to Professor Paresh Malhotra, head of the Division of Neurology at Imperial College London. “Tests have repeatedly been shown to be very sensitive to the brain changes that cause Alzheimer’s and the pace of progress is such that we are likely to see them starting to be implemented within the NHS and also to see additional blood tests for other brain diseases.” Around 20 Alzheimer’s disease drugs are in late-stage clinical trials, so the new year will bring some results and potentially other treatments come through to regulators. Each one is a step closer to a future where treatments may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. Dr Richard Oakley, associate director of Research and Innovation at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “For the around one million people in the UK with dementia, hope remains firmly on the horizon for further advances in 202
