“If it had been a 15-year-old boy in those appointments, all the things I was explaining would have been considered as huge autism red flags,” she added. “And I find that so, so concerning. If it hadn’t been for the internet, doing my own research, and pushing so hard myself – I never would have got diagnosed with autism.”Recent research
revealed that more than 22% of autistic women —more than one in five — are hospitalised because of their mental health by age 25. To get to such a crisis point at such a young age doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of long-term, systemic failures in correctly identifying and supporting autistic women.
