Dr. Ahmed highlighted that individuals with underactive thyroids often find it difficult to lose weight. The NHS recognizes weight gain as a typical symptom of this condition, along with fatigue, depression, and cold intolerance. He also recommends women get tested for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), another condition that can impede weight loss. Symptoms like excessive hair growth, sweating, acne, and irregular periods may indicate PCOS. According to the NHS, these symptoms usually appear in late adolescence or early adulthood, and many women only discover they have PCOS when they face difficulties conceiving.
