A new plan proposes to reduce the impact of road traffic on residents

Villagers in Cossall say they support improvements to ‘medieval’ through roads where ‘traffic is getting worse’. In March Cossall Parish Council submitted its Cossall Neighbourhood Plan to Broxtowe Borough Council, now a consultation period for the plan is in place from May 30 until July 14 this year over the recommendations made in the plan.

The plan states that the majority of roads in Cossall are through roads connecting Cossall to Ilkeston and the adjoining Parishes of Awsworth and Trowell. It describes Cossall Road, Dead Lane to Church Lane as ‘medieval in origin that has developed over many centuries and is not suited to the needs of modern traffic.’“Traffic is getting worse, now, year on year it’s getting worse,” said Lewis Winter who owns Trinity Farm on Awsworth Lane.

“The roads are alright, it’s a village so you don’t expect a dual carriage way. There needs to be some traffic calming. How is this road going to cope when they put so many hundreds of houses?” Another villager who wished to remain anonymous said: “I support any new measures, I think it’s important we keep improving the area in any way. There can be a lot of traffic in and out of the village and people cutting through. We are right near Ilkeston, the retail park and busy roads so people sometimes just fly through.
