City officials are hopeful a new health and wellness program could assist in protecting firefighters from risks of the job.
Fire Chief Larry Walters explained plans for a health and wellness program for firefighters.MEDINA, Ohio –
“Every year we learn a little bit more about the risks associated for cancer in firefighters,” Fire Chief Larry Walters said during a recent health, safety and sanitation meeting. “With the data coming out we are trying to do some things on the front end both before and after a fire to help minimize the risks for our firefighters. We are also looking at implementing some screening programs down the road to help with early detection.
Hanwell said the city has been in talks with a local oncologist to discuss the types of cancers first responders tend to be at risk for as well as the treatments and risks involved. He said a local oncologist is reviewing the research the fire department has gathered. “The point is to determine which screenings would be the most beneficial and then look at recommendations like should we do certain screenings annually or biannually,” Hanwell said. “I just want to compliment the chief for doing this research and also recognize members of the local medical community for supporting us in these efforts.”
