Mary Ann Winden, 88, ranked seventh in Singles 85+ by the International Tennis Federation. She’s also an accomplished church organist and choral director.
It took a lot of tears for 88-year-old tennis player Mary Ann Winden to discover she was just as passionate about expressing herself on the court as she was on the church organ or in front of the church choir. Not her tears, mind you. A former high school student's. Back in her mid-30s when she directed the choir at Roosevelt High School, Winden tried to help a sophomore soprano with her vocal technique for a UIL solo. The technique brought the frustrated teen to tears.
Antonian’s Blake Medici caps off freshman tennis season with a TAPPS 6A state title A few years later, Winden faced a major turning point in her budding amateur tennis career. A cortisone shot caused the muscles to atrophy in her right arm, resulting in right elbow surgery. So she went back to her vow to learn something new the hard way and learned to play tennis with her left hand. Today she's one of the few ambidextrous tennis players in the sport. And she only wants to get better.
Clack: Once a prodigy, Venus Williams is now a sage 'Bit of a perfectionist' Winden's competitive streak actually started with her music. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1954, Winden later earned a Bachelor of Music from Southwestern University in Georgetown. She then earned a Master of Music from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., where she would meet her future husband with the same degree. Arthur Winden died in 2020.
