On a bright Friday lunchtime in Shoreditch’s Bistro Freddie, Hannah Crosbie, a 26-year-old wine writer and broadcaster, is flicking through the restaurant’s extensive wine list with one brief: to impress me. To accompany our snail flatbread, radicchio salad and seafood croquettes, she lands on a bottle of Aligoté, “the bastard white grape of Burgundy”, she explains, taking a sip, as most white wines from the region are Chardonnay.
Her Maison Margiela Tabis, with their signature split toe perfect for holding the stem of a glass, “should be the unofficial wine girl shoe”, she says, laughing. As part of a new wave of young women wine experts – see also Honey Spencer, Henna Zinzuwadia and Alex Price – Crosbie is seeing “massive changes happening in terms of gender”, she says. “In terms of class and race? Not as much. But it is a conversation starting to be had.
