Nearly 20 years later, Claudine Cheng and other organizers seek to continue 'moving forward together'

The City’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Month celebration began on a whim nearly 20 years ago.

“It was just spontaneous,” Cheng said of her conversation with Newsom, who’s now the governor of California. “It came to my mind. It was totally unplanned. Just serendipity, I guess. I had no idea what was about to happen.” Officially, she’s the director and founder of the APA Heritage Foundation — the nonprofit that runs the festival — and organizer of the APA Heritage Celebration Committee. The committee is a 30-person cadre of volunteer community leaders from within San Francisco’s expansive Asian American community.

“She really inspires me, so I will never say no to her,” said Jay Xu, director of the Asian Art Museum, which has partnered with the celebration for the last 15 years. “Nonstop is the right word.” Is San Francisco on track to be carbon neutral by 2040? More than two years after adopting its ambitious Climate Action Plan, The City “has taken care of a lot of the low-hanging fruit” while the hard work remains

“I became more aware that we need to have our voices heard,” Cheng said. “Most of us didn’t grow up learning to be vocal about what concerns us.”
