The Duchess of Sussex's mic-friendly valley girl tones and generic empowerment language are ideal for a podcast network aiming to 'make life suck less'Meghan, Duchess of Sussex speaks on stage at The Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit . Rescued from the moat of an elite institution by the benevolence of global corporations, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex forged a $20m deal with Spotify to do what everyone on a path to self-realisation must do: make content.
It’s conceptually sound – but in reality it consisted of rambling anecdotes designed to showcase Meghan’s mic-friendly valley girl tones, generic empowerment language and a vague atmosphere that made the whole thing a little… boring. Lo and behold, the deal was struck off last year to much furore, when Bill Simmons, Spotify’s head of podcast innovation and monetisation, said on his own podcast that the couple were “f**king grifters”.
And yet. And yet.
As well as its content, Lemonada also offers merch. Water bottles, T shirts and mugs bearing “Make life suck less” slogans, as well as podcast-specific offerings such as sweatshirts and Thermos flasks with the repeating slogan “Add to cart” – the title of a podcast in which a comedian and a journalist have “honest, revealing conversations about all the big and little things they’re adding to, or removing from, their carts”.
All of this is to say that it feels like a great home for Meghan. Because by being lovely and aesthetic and gentle and saying the right things, it negates the possibility that investigating or even accepting things that are ugly and difficult and wrong is what makes life interesting. Dare I say it’s also what makes content interesting, too.
