Meghan Markle uses her platform to highlight the impact of the California wildfires and helps a young woman who lost her Billie Eilish concert t-shirt in the fire.
Meghan Markle has resurfaced on Instagram to give a shoutout to singer Billie Eilish for helping her with a sweet request following the Los Angeles wildfires. In a video shared on Tuesday, Markle, casually dressed in a black sweatshirt embroidered with her children's names, Lilibet and Archie, excitedly shared that something she was expecting in the mail had finally arrived.
The Duchess of Sussex, 43, explained that about two or three weeks ago, she and her husband, Prince Harry, visited the town of Altadena, completely devastated by the LA fires in January. Markle, who appeared to be make-up free, explained they were visiting a mother and her 15-year-old daughter whose home burned down in the area, joining them to see their home for the first time since the fire. The 'With Love, Meghan' star was told the one thing the young woman had been looking for in her home was a t-shirt she got at a Billie Eilish concert that was left in the washing machine or dryer. Unfortunately, their home was destroyed in the fires and so was the t-shirt. However, Markle was determined to have the 15-year-old's story reach Eilish and successfully scored a ton of signed merch for the teen, which she showed in the video. 'I thought of everybody that I knew and I made a voice note, and I was like,' Please can someone get this voice note to Billie Eilish? Here's what I'm asking,'' Markle explained in the clip. Meghan Markle then excitedly panned the camera to the bounty of stuff, including a lunchbox, t-shirts, and more. 'I don't even know what this stuff means, but it's signed for her!' Markle said excitedly, joking that she felt 'old' for not knowing if the lunchbox was a popular part of her fandom. While thanking the star, she also revealed that it was singer Adam Levine who helped her secure the merch from Eilish. 'Huge thank you, Billie Eilish, this is going to mean so much to her, and honestly, to Adam Levine and Bahati, you guys helped me get this over the line, and to everyone who is showing up for people in big and small ways to get through what's happened in California, just thank you so much,' she shared. 'I'm going to go and email her mom now, just wanted to share with you guys,' Markle concluded with a big smile on her face. In the caption of her video, Markle shared a heartfelt message to her followers. 'Let's keep supporting those affected by the California wildfires,' she wrote. 'Thanks to everyone who made this possible but most importantly, thank you to our first responders who are the community’s real heroes.' This video comes just a few weeks after Markle and Harry visited victims at a wildfire evacuation center in Los Angeles. Markle also paid a visit to the Altadena Girls Fire Recovery Fund, a cause that the couple donated to through their Archewell Foundation. The fund was launched by 14-year-old Avery Colvert to support teenage girls in her community to 'regain their sense of self and confidence' after the fires. However, despite their efforts, actress Justine Bateman went off on the couple on X, formerly Twitter, bashing them as 'disaster tourists' in January. Family Ties star Bateman wrote online: 'Meghan Markle and Harry are no better than ambulance chasers. 'What a repulsive'photo op' they achieved. They are'touring the damage'? Are they politicians now? In the caption of her video, Markle shared a heartfelt message to her followers. 'Let’s keep supporting those affected by the California wildfires,' she wrote. 'They don't live here; they are tourists. Disaster Tourists.' However, a source later told Page Six that the couple feels 'offended' by Bateman's comments. The source told the outlet: 'It's offensive to Meghan and Harry that anybody would think this is merely a photo opportunity. 'Meghan was born and raised in Los Angeles so this is, and always will be, home to her.' They added that Markle is 'not just a tourist', and that her 'heart is completely broken for all the lives that have been lost and for those whose homes have been destroyed in these fires
