The group, consisting of Mel B , Mel C, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell, shot to fame in the 90s, but their real names were often overshadowed by their Spice monikers. Mel B , 49, says it was a 'lazy journalist' who decided to call her Scary Spice, but admits she did live up to the title.
Alongside her, Emma was dubbed Baby Spice due to her being the youngest of the band, while Mel C's love for sportswear earned her the name Sporty Spice. Furthermore, Geri had the nickname Ginger Spice because of her hair colour and Victoria's chic style led to her moniker, Posh Spice. Speaking on Paloma Faith's Mad Sad and Bad podcast, the-49 year-old dismissed the host's suggestion that scary insinuates being 'mad and unpredictable' and explained why she was called it. She shared: 'I don't think it did, if you knew me... first of all, all those names were given to us by a lazy journalist who couldn't remember our names. 'So it was like, 'She's in a tracksuit, this one is sporty, she's in a nice little dress, that's posh'. 'So, the reason he said scary to me is because, say for example we'd be doing an interview, I'd go (takes the notes from the journalist) , 'Now interview me'.' She added: 'I'd make that person feel a bit scared, so that's why I got called scary.' The singer revealed that during the band's early days, she also wouldn't hesitate to shut down an interviewer if she didn't like their questions and confronted record producers when need be. 'I think if you would've met me back then I was a bit scary,' Mel told Paloma. Addressing speculation about her nickname, she added: 'Some people even say, 'Oh, she's called scary because she's mixed race'. Or, you know, 'She wears leopard print'. I've been wearing leopard print since I was 12.'Mel B is currently participating in the new Netflix show Celebrity Bear Hunt, where 12 celebrities attempt to escape survival expert Bear Grylls in Costa Rica.
