Domestic airfares are still a year away from returning to pre-pandemic levels, Melbourne Airport says.
Domestic airfares are still a year away from returning to pre-pandemic levels even as airport passenger numbers returned to levels before COVID-19 in March and over the Easter holidays, Melbourne Airport says.
More than 2.71 million passengers came through Melbourne Airport in March – about 88 per cent of pre-pandemic levels – and slightly higher than January when 2.7 million passengers passed through its gates. This had a bad implication for pricing, pushing out his estimates for 2019 level domestic airfares out to mid-2024 at best. “We know many Australians will still travel domestically despite the economic conditions, and any softening in consumer confidence will be countered with lower airfares.”
Sydney Airport has yet to release its March traffic data, but late last month it said it expected passenger levels to hit 90 per cent of 2019 levels over the Easter holiday period at the start of April.
