Two years and three VCAT hearings later, a critical care nurse has only just found the former landlord who owed him $1450 over an unliveable rental

After a building inspection was finally carried out two months later, he was then issued a notice to vacate within seven days.

That represented $1453.83 the tribunal awarded him at what was the third such hearing after the first two in 2022 reached no result because no one else showed. They eventually gave him the details of a solicitor they said acted for the former rental provider, but the solicitor also said he was no longer their client and they could not assist. And so just last month week he rang a workplace in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs he believed he had isolated his former landlord to, and then drove there and gave the receptionist VCAT’s ruling.

The two-bedroom house was sold just two weeks after the former tenant vacated it, for $1.73m in August 2021. The owner had paid just $525,000 for it in 2005.
