A boundary change means Sydney is not the country's biggest city, for the first time in over a century.
Melbourne has overtaken Sydney as Australia's most populous city for the first time since the 19th Century gold rush, following a boundary change.But with populations rapidly growing on Melbourne's fringe, the city limits have been expanded to include the area of Melton.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics defines a city's "significant urban area", by including all connecting suburbs with more than 10,000 people."Until the 2021 census definition, the Sydney significant area had a higher population than Melbourne.
