City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp wants Airbnb property owners to shift into the long-term rental market as a means of tackling housing affordability.
It would not say yet what it might do, but Warrnambool City Council introduced a $400 annual fee on short-stay accommodation in February after yearly fees were earlier introduced by Mornington Peninsula Shire , Bass Coast Shire Council , and Frankston City Council .Ms Capp said having more properties leased out through short-stay accommodation meant fewer homes were available for workers and students.
“We know the quickest way to increase affordable housing is to utilise housing that is already in place.” “You want to drive down prices, or stop the rampant increase in prices, you have to have more units available at almost every price point and every part of our state – both rental and properties built for the market.“We’ll have a very exciting set of announcements that are about making decisions faster, dealing with planning backlogs and delays, and getting more properties built, getting more properties on the market – whether they be for sale or rent – and making sure that we protect tenants.
“Everyone in Yarra should have access to affordable housing,” City of Yarra mayor Claudia Nguyen said. “Housing is a human right and so it is incredibly important that all levels of government investigate the impact of short stay accommodation on the long-term rental supply in our communities,” mayor Angelica Panopoulos said.
