Actor Melissa Joan Hart has revealed she recently had a breast cancer scare to her followers on Instagram. Here's what she had to say
, whose second season just arrived on the streaming service, used the post as a reminder to women to attend their mammograms, captioning the post: “Just wanted to share my little journey of emotion this afternoon! All is good but feeling vulnerable today especially. Reminder to all women over 35 – get your mammogram!”
In the US, yearly mammograms are recommended from the age of 40. In the UK, women are invited for breast cancer screening every three years between the ages of 50 and 70, while people at a higher risk of breast cancer because of family history or gene mutation are recommended to have regular MRI scans or mammograms from as young as 20.
Hart also revealed she was feeling particularly vulnerable at the time as she, her husband Mark, and eldest son Mason were about to go on a trip to Zambia with the charity World Vision, while younger sons Brandon and Tucker stayed at home. “I’m a little unsure what we’re getting ourselves into and I’m a little nervous – excited, but I’m nervous – and we’re leaving behind two of our boys so I’m nervous leaving them so far away, out of communication… there’s just a lot going on.
Reflecting on her experience, she shared a message of support for people with cancer, saying, “I’m just thinking about all those people out there that go through these kinds of struggles and […] I’m praying for everybody out there that goes through these things.”Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and one in seven women will develop it in their lifetime. While it’s more common among older women, it’s important to be aware of the symptoms and check your breasts regularly.
