MEN readers have been sharing their memories of Manchester's cinemas, some now lost forever
Manchester has seen plenty of cinemas and picture houses come and go over the years, with generations of families able to enjoy them before many sadly shut their doors for good.
The round-up also features Bolton ’s Empire Cinema, the Odeon in Sale, Roxy Cinema in Hollinwood, and the Palatine Cinema. A number of Stockport cinemas complete the round-up, including the Multiplex Cinema, Classic Cinema, and The Savoy Picture House.The latter was later bought by a local chip shop owner who has been running the venue as a private cinema since 1994. Taken between 1954 and 1995, the images in the original article show each cinema standing proudly as they served our communities.
Another reader commented: “Loved going to the cinema in Rochdale with its big balcony. Watched Rocky IV there about five times as a young teenager and it only cost £1 to get in. Some people commented on the current state of a selection of the cinemas that are no longer open. One said: “The old Ashton cinema is still standing, but it's been derelict for many years now.” Another wrote: “The one in Hyde used to be two cinemas, but you wouldn't want to look inside now!”
