Watford will return to pre-season training tomorrow to begin their preparations for the Championship campaign under new head coach Valerien Ismael, but 41 years ago the Hornets were getting ready to enter unchartered waters.
The summer of 1982 saw Graham Taylor’s charges facing a new challenge – the prospect of competing in the top division of the English game for the first time in the club’s history – following their historic promotion from the old Second Division. Watford didn’t just rise to that challenge; they shook the football establishment to its core as they more than matched the game’s elite to finish runners-up behind champions Liverpool.It was the stuff of fairytales which even the most optimistic of Hornets supporter could only have dreamed about in July of that year when our photographer watched Taylor’s coaching team of John Ward and Steve Harrison put the players through their paces at Vicarage Road and in Cassiobury Park.
