Hundreds of corrections and detention professionals are in Mobile this week for the National Institute for Jail Operations 2024 regional Jail Con. The conventio
n includes training on issues impacting jails across the country, like jail suicides.
"We've become the warehouse for the mentally ill, unfortunately, and it's not the appropriate place for them, “Unfortunately, we're just seeing the revolving door of people in jail for mental health reasons that should be treated elsewhere, and we should try to divert them from coming to the jail,” he said. “We're trying to coordinate and work with the judicial system and community resources now to try to have an impact on that and reduce some of that recidivism due to mental health issues."
“I think there just needs to be a sort of step up in a sense to try to address the issue, and I am not trying to throw stones at the state of Alabama. This is a national issue, so everybody is trying to figure this out with the resources they have and how best to address it,” he said.
