Inspectors said there was a 'strong smell of drains' in one corridor

A mental health hospital’s service where staff members fell asleep on four separate occasions has been told to improve by inspectors. The men's service at St Andrew's Healthcare in Northampton was visited by the Care Quality Commission in October 2022.

Inspectors said they found “slow but continued improvement” since June’s inspection in a report that was published on Friday, but that it had breached regulations in five areas. They also found that despite action being taken since the last inspection, there was a strong smell of drains in one corridor.

The charity provides specialist mental healthcare for patients with complex mental health needs. Most of its 600 patients are referred to it by the NHS.
