NHS trust leaders reported a 61 per cent rise in mental health sickness absence last year – even before industrial action began The mental health strain of striking NHS medics is likely to see an increase in staff absence with a knock-on effect on patient care, health leaders have warned.
“Anxiety, stress and depression are consistently the top reasons for staff sickness. Trust leaders tell us their staff suffer moral injury becausethey want to deliver. We know that for some staff, this has made the decision to take strike action itself even more difficult.” The NHS Providers survey also found 93 per cent of trust leaders were concerned about staff burnout this winter, with 80 per cent concerned about staff morale.
